We were very excited for our trip on Wednesday to court. The coach arrived just on time and drove us through town where we met Kath.
Just as she described the first people we met were security. They were really polite and helped us through all of the security procedures. One of the ladies at reception told Kath that we were one of the quietest and kindest schools she had seen at the court!
After arriving, we headed to the court room, it was smaller than we imagined. Kath told us that there were larger courts that were being used. It seemed very new. We talked about the different jobs that people do inside the court room and where they sit. We all knew where the Judge sits! Other people inside the court room are ushers, barristers and court clerks.
Next, Miss Whitehead and Kath explained that we were going to carry out a role play. Miss Whitehead had selected roles for all of the children. Fatima played the part of the Judge
Ciara was the Court Clerk and Caden and Eduard were the Ushers
Kelsey E, Henry, Olivia and Caitlin were all Baristers
Kieron played the role of the defendant and Sean and Emma were the police officers watching over him
Kelsey B, Weronika and Chelsea were the newsreporters making notes on the case
Wiktor, Damian, Hajrah, Amelia and
Kacper gave witness statements and the rest of the class formed the jury who decided if the defendant was guilty or not guilty. Lucky for him, after listening to the evidence they found him not guilty! Before heading back to school we had the chance to ask some law students questions about studying law to get a job in the legal system. It sounds like they work really hard.
We had a great day!
